BIOPIXELS/NANOSCAPES - two shorts exploring the world of butterfly evo-devo

Images of butterfly wings at the microscopic scale are stunning, and at the nanoscopic scale they become otherworldly. Shot with light and electron microscopes at magnifications up to
50,000x, Nanoscapes reveals the elaborate topography of butterfly wings that underlies iridescent coloration.  Biopixels meditates on the seemingly endless variation of color scale arrangements that underlie the morphological diversity of butterfly wing patterns, including CRISPR mutants that were generated in our lab.

THE SULPHUR BUTTERFLIES/REARING ANARTIA - two research movies reimagined with music

The two movies were retrieved from the Smithsonian Archives as research movies in the files of entomologist Bob Silberglied (1946-1982).

SON OF MONARCHS       (2021)

After his grandmother's death, a Mexican biologist living in New York returns to his hometown, nestled in the majestic monarch butterfly forests of Michoacán. The journey forces him to confront past traumas and reflect on his hybrid identity, sparking a personal and spiritual metamorphosis.
